There are multiple types of driveway gate locks available on the market today. The two main types are solenoid locks and electromagnetic locks, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
Before discussing these gate locks, let’s first go over pin locks. Pin locks secure your gate opener to the post or gate, helping to prevent theft. They are simple devices that fit into the mounting locations on your gate opener, replacing the bolts included in your kit.
Now, let’s talk about gate locking devices. The most popular option is the solenoid gate lock. These locks come with a control board and enough wire to connect to either the gate lock’s control board or the master control board of your gate opener. Mounting hardware is not included, since each installation is unique to the gate.
We carry three brands of solenoid gate locks. The Estate Swing and Gate Crafters locks are essentially the same unit.
The GTO/PRO lock uses a different style of locking tab compared to the Estate Swing and Gate Crafters models. Its tab slides back inside the unit, requiring about 10 pounds of force. One drawback is that in high-wind conditions, the pin may become trapped behind the tab. Additionally, if your gate opener has a soft-stop feature, it must be disabled, as the reduced force may not fully latch the gate.
In contrast, the Estate Swing and Gate Crafters locks use a rolling latch design that requires minimal force. The locking tab folds smoothly into the unit, making locking and unlocking easier. These locks perform reliably even in high winds, thanks to the smooth back of the latch.
GTO/PRO also offers a push-to-open / open-position gate lock. This lock is identical to the standard GTO/PRO lock but designed either to secure your gate in the open position or to serve as a push-to-open lock. For this use, installation must be planned in advance.
We also carry an electromagnetic gate lock from Gate Crafters. Note that this type is not compatible with solar gate openers, as it requires continuous power. Additionally, if the lock’s wire is cut, the lock becomes inoperable since it depends on a constant electrical supply.
