As a car drives up the driveway towards the gate the moving metal disturbs the electromagnetic field and the gate opens. The different lengths of wire are so you can put it back as far out from the gate as you have room to, the further out it is the better the detection it will be and the less the car will have to slow down to wait for the gate to open. (you cannot splice more wire on to the existing wire)
